The License to Carry Class (LTC)

 Class participation and completion:

 

  • This course is NOT a “how-to-shoot” class. Students must demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency with their handgun including:

    • loading 

    • unloading 

    • slide or cylinder manipulation 

    • proper use of safety devices and operational controls 

 

  • Students are expected to handle their firearms in a safe manner as part of the proficiency test. Those who cannot meet these standards will fail the proficiency test and need to retest at later date. Prospective students who have little handgun experience are encouraged to visit the range prior to class or attend the Basics  of Pistol Shooting Class.
     

  • Range qualifications must be completed with a semi-automatic handgun or a revolver of at least .32 caliber. You can legally carry either after obtaining your LTC.

 

Tuition includes:

 

  • 4-hour classroom instruction  (Not including time on the range, breaks, or lunch.)  Total class time will be between 5 and 6 hours.

  • Range qualification, range fee, and B-27 target

  • Certificate of Completion (Form LTC-100), upon successful completion of classroom and range portions of the class

 

Tuition Does Not Include:

 

  • Fingerprints - Follow the instructions at the end of the DPS application process on obtaining fingerprints 

  • Passport Photos (no longer required if you request on the application to use current Texas drivers’ license photo)

  • Ammunition (50 Rounds Minimum).  Recommend 100 rounds in case it is necessary to repeat the shooting test.

  • State of Texas LTC Application Fees

 

What you should bring to the range:

 

  • Your handgun  (MUST be a semi-auto or at least 32 caliber revolver)

  • At least 50 rounds of name-brand ammunition (NO reloaded ammo allowed)

  • Hearing protection (electronic ear muffs preferred)

  • Eye protection (prescription glasses are okay)

  • Appropriate clothing for the range, to include a button-up shirt and closed toe shoes

 

Warning:  You cannot be on the range without proper protection items.  This is a range requirement. We must abide by these rules to use the facility.
